Dakin students enjoy

new pet jellyfish

by Deanna Mitchener

The A.H. Dakin School just got two jellyfish for
the students and staff to enjoy and care for.
A jellyfish is mainly made up of (as their name
suggests) jelly, along with water and protein.
Principal Mike Belecky said, "Kevin Metzger is
our mastermind behind the jellyfish. He brought
the idea to one of our teachers last year. We
thought it would be a good idea as they help calm
the kids down as they walk by the tank and watch
them."
They were going to be a classroom pet but they
never got that far last year. So this year when the
jelly fish arrived they decided to have them in the
main display case for everyone to enjoy.
"It took about two weeks to get the water at the
right level for the jellyfish. Kevin got them from
some place out of Vancouver B.C. and they have
only been here just over a week now," said
Principal Belecky.
"They are really interesting to watch when they
are feeding because you can actually see through
them and you can see the food going into their A.H. Dakin students Marissa Stepaniuk, Aisha Bartolay, and Krymson Miller enjoy watching

Things were cooking

at Parkland… Literally!

by Mrs. Nola Preville (Foods teacher)
Usually, foods classes prepare food products for their own consumption.
Students practice measurement, safety, sanitation, and preparation skills to
make a product.
But this time the Foods department at Parkland School prepared nutritious
snacks for Pine Grove Middle School's 'Health Day'.
On the menu was snackin' meatballs, mini muffins consisting of strawberry
banana and blueberry oat, and date squares. All items were chosen from the
“Eat Most Often” category from the Alberta Health website:
albertahealthwebsite.ca
The goal of our project was to implement a community partnership with Pine
Grove, where our students volunteered their class time to prepare nutritious
snacks. We were also able to highlight what can be created in a foods class at
Parkland, creating an interest for future Parkland students.
