Wildwood bronc rider qualifies for Canadian Finals Rodeo

by Miranda L'Hirondelle

19 year old Dawson Hay from
Wildwood has qualified for the 2017
Canadian Finals Rodeo which will
take place at the Northland Coliseum
in Edmonton from November 8 to the
12.
This is Hay's third time competing at
the Canadian Finals and it will be his
second time competing in the novice
saddle bronc event. He qualified for
the finals last year and in 2013 in the
junior event. “It was my goal for the
start of the year to qualify for the
Canadian Finals and I was pretty
excited to see that I made it,” said Hay.
Dawson grew up around rodeos as
his father Rod Hay was the eight-time
Canadian champion and four-time
Calgary Stampede champion.
“Hopefully I'll become the champion
after the five days and I can continue
to ride well throughout the finals,” said
Hay.
Dawson has competed in about 30
rodeos every weekend since April to
get to the CFR as well as training at
home in his spare time and through the
winter.
“Lots of the rodeo people from our
community [Wildwood] all seem to be
following along, especially during the
Calgary Stampede and stuff like that, Hubbell
they are pretty supportive,” said Hay.
