120 world class cyclists race in Edson

by Adrienne Tait

The September long weekend saw the Tour of Alberta
race through the area with stops in Grande Prairie,
Grande Cache, Jasper, Edson, Spruce Grove and
Edmonton.
This year's race offered two major climbs and more
elevation change than the two previous races. 2015
marked the first time racers had to compete in the
Rocky Mountains during the tour.
Due to fresh gravel being laid along the designated
route within Yellowhead County the race had a last
minute alteration to the course which resulted in less
time on gravel and more pavement time.
“The stretch in the Yellowhead County piece – they
had fresh gravel put down on the road and it needed to
be a little bit more hard-packed. It's just unsafe and we
just didn't want to have any unnecessary crashes so we
ended up moving off that stretch of road,” said Tour of ...And they’re off!
Alberta executive director Duane Vienneau, “The actual
length is only a couple of kilometers shorter overall.”
To compensate for the difference in length there was a
second in-town circuit added to the Spruce Grove route.
Vienneau said due to the weather and the difficult climb
the day before “it was the right decision to make” for
the racers.
“It's a long stage today. It's the longest we've ever
done being over 200 km,” said Villeneuve of the stage Celebrating a “waste free” event

race had a full complement of riders and had
experienced no medical issues at the start of stage five.
“Usually on day five you're down to 115 or 114 riders.
They are all still in the race,” said Vienneau.
The first two years of the Tour of Alberta the race
was run around the Edmonton and Calgary areas. Last
year's race around Lethbridge was cold and rainy and
according to Vienneau resulted in a couple of racers
going to the hospital with hypothermia.
Edson hosted a festival to kick off this leg of the race
complete with a juggler, local dignitaries, and vendors.
Spruce Grove native Ryan Anderson was the
“hometown boy” for the race. Anderson said he got his
start mountain biking, “It all started with mountain
biking and then road and track in and around Spruce
Grove and Edmonton. I used to do the whole mountain
bike series throughout Alberta so I'm quite familiar with
all of these areas,” said Anderson who recommends
finding a local club as a good way to introduce kids to
competitive cycling.
“The course has been great, yesterday in Jasper and
then the stage the day before. The weather has been
cold this year but it has been a really nice race. The
next two days favor me so I'll try to get a good result,”
said Anderson who came in eleventh overall and first in
the stage six Canadian classification.
