Wildfire west of Mercoal (EWF030)

Edson Forest Area – Wildfire west of Mercoal

Posted on 26 May 2025

May 26, 2025: The fire danger is high in the Edson Forest Area, due to hot and windy conditions. Although some regions received rain, it was not widespread and vegetation is drying out. A wildfire can ignite easily and spread quickly in these conditions. Please be cautious if you are spending time outdoors.

Wildfire west of Mercoal (EWF030)

Alberta Wildfire firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment operators continue to respond to wildfire EWF030, located 6 km west of Mercoal and 16 km southwest of Robb. Yellowhead County firefighters are working on structure protection in the area.

Firefighters, heavy equipment and a night vision equipped helicopter worked through the night to prevent the spread of the wildfire. They prioritized the east side, which is the closest to Mercoal. Airtankers were on scene yesterday and will return today if required.

The wildfire is currently classified as out of control and remains approximately 393 hectares in size. Humidity and smoke settled over the wildfire early this morning which helps diminish fire activity.
